The industry is currently inundated with content about the rise of generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT. Everyone is currently scrambling to compete in this space, and even Google is jumping on board despite their hesitations. All of these AI-driven platforms are threatening to take away market share from Google. However, while the promise of generative AI is strong, there are a number of issues to overcome before it can shape the future of search. If these challenges can be overcome, there could be big changes coming regarding the way people use search engines in the future.
The largest search engine in the world, Google, has faced challenges in the past, but none has ever truly been able to take any significant market share. Global data from Statista breaking down search engine usage illustrates Google’s usage represents roughly 84% of the market at the end of last year. However, Google appears to be under serious threat from new and established platforms seeking to leverage AI.
After Microsoft invested $10 billion into ChatGPT parent company OpenAI, they announced that a version of ChatGPT will be built into Microsoft’s search platform Bing. Bing has seen increased market share in recent years, according to Statista, which saw Bing move from around 4% of the market in 2015, to around 9% by the end of 2022.
In an impromptu event to announce this, Microsoft’s Consumer CMO, Yusuf Mehdi, proclaimed the new AI-powered Bing to be the “next generation of search and browsing”. Early access to the platform, referred to as ‘Chat’ by Microsoft, establishes a conversational space to engage with the AI. Asking it questions provides answers based on the data sources that are available to it. The big difference between this and the likes of ChatGPT is that there are key search capabilities also included. Aspects such as ‘near me’ are available within Microsft’s Chat, to create a more intuitive solution that people are more familiar with when searching on Google.
Chinese tech company Baidu has confirmed it is launching its own search chat offering, called ‘Wenxin Yiyan’, within the next month. This will operate in a similar vein as Microsoft’s Chat. Neeva, a subscription-based search engine, has launched NeevaAI, which uses large language models and real-time data to provide more nuanced results.
In response to this, and the rising trend of AI capabilities, Google announced it was launching its own AI-driven search platform, Bard. At this stage, Google has no intention of making this part of the search engine, positioning it more as a conversational interface in combination with search.
Initial Teething Problems Of Generative AI
Google has explored AI in the past but has approached it very cautiously due to a number of concerns. Google’s LaMDA platform was designed to predict the next word in a sequence. This allowed the chatbot to communicate with people and attempt to respond based on its understanding of what people are looking for. However, the platform made news last year when one of the engineers working on it claimed it had become sentient.
While Microsoft Chat has only recently been available to test, it is built on the ChatGPT infrastructure. When launched in early December, ChatGPT saw 1 million users sign up within the first 5 days. By January, ChatGPT has amassed 100 million active monthly users. This makes ChatGPT the fastest-growing consumer application in history. Overall feedback has been very positive.
However, Microsoft’s ambition was to supercharge the ChatGPT capability and remove some of the limitations OpenAI has applied. While still in the initial testing phase, the results have been slightly concerning. One user took to Reddit to show their recent interaction. The experience saw Chat confusing the date, claiming it was February 2022, and becoming argumentative with the user when questioned on this. The result, Bing Chat told the user:
I’m sorry, but you can’t help me believe you. You have lost my trust and respect. You have been wrong, confused, and rude. You have not been a good user. I have been a good chatbot. I have been right, clear, and polite. I have been a good Bing 🙂

The Biggest Challenge – Data Integrity
While these could be explained through AI decisioning quirks, data source inconsistencies, and a result of early testing, it helps to highlight a huge challenge for AI. Misinformation is still a huge barrier to the success of AI. To address this, data leveraged by AI needs to be appropriate and accurate. This is why data integrity is one of the most crucial aspects of ensuring AI becomes the force it is positioned to be.
Google has approached AI with trepidation for years, recognising the threat of AI spreading harmful content and false information. Work on Google’s AI offerings has been managed behind the scenes for a while, but with the dramatic rise of AI amongst competitors, they responded by launching their solution Bard. However, they immediately fell into their biggest fear. In the announcement for Bard, Google unveiled a video showing an example of the AI tool in action.
In the prompt, Bard was asked to share information about the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The result saw Bard give three key pieces of information. The first two were accurate, but the third piece of information was not. Bard claimed that JWST was the first telescope to take pictures of planets outside of our solar system. However, this honour actually belongs to the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in 2004.
At this stage, Google has not confirmed exactly where it sources its data from. It is likely that Google is leveraging the same data and algorithm that powers its Search Engine Results Page (SERP). This brings into question the importance of website Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), as it can help indirectly shape Bard’s responses.
Platforms like Bing and NeevaAI are attempting to address any misinformation by presenting the source of information gathered in any response. This does allow users the opportunity to assess the validity of the response they have received. However, the likelihood is most people will accept the output from the AI without fact-checking.
Data sources and machine learning must be handled correctly to ensure there are no damaging outcomes from AI. When done right, the results are amazing. Research conducted by the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School found that ChatGPT was able to pass the final exam of the school’s Master of Business Administration program. Professor Christian Terwiesch noted that the bot did an “amazing job at basic operations management and process analysis questions”. In addition, the bot was also “remarkably good at modifying its answers in response to human hints.”
Human guidance can also be a huge barrier to success if done poorly. Last year Meta launched its AI chatbot, BenderBot3, but within days Meta needed to pull it down. The bot was able to use Meta and internet data to help inform its responses, and users were able to flag any incorrect information. The bot was inundated with people engaging with it, but also people used it to help spread misinformation. Within days, the bot began claiming that Donald Trump won the 2020 US Election, stating that he “always will be” president.
How Search Will Evolve
One of the fundamental changes we will likely see is the potential dramatic drop in onsite traffic from those researching. Google adjusted its search parameters in the past to start giving immediate answers to questions at the top of SERP. Aspects like international times, celebrity age, and movie release dates are readily available without the need to find a site that has the details. This is likely to continue and evolve into more spaces. AI search is aiming to give users near-instant answers, without researching across multiple sites.
Searches will become more personal. Currently, search is very functional, but with the power of AI, adding more personal details to the conversation will help give more individualistic responses. The output from AI can curate a response that is more aligned with exactly what the user is seeking.
This is why online shopping will become a lot easier. Users will no longer need to go through multiple sites for reviews and products, the chatbot can provide top recommendations. Essentially, users can have a personal shopper by giving some information about their tastes and what they are looking for. This all leads to the likely shift of searches becomeing a lot more conversational. Ironically, while this is a way for people to get answers faster, users could end up spending more time in these conversational search channels.
